The Townshend Taherzadeh Library and Archives is established in honour of George Townshend (1876-1957), the founding figure of the Irish Bahá’í Community, and Adib Taherzadeh (1921-2000), a father figure during its formative years.

Located in Waterford, the library’s primary objectives are to promote, preserve and provide accessibility to the rich history and development of the Bahá’í Faith in the island of Ireland and throughout the world, and to become a centre of learning and research for future generations. Its initial aims are:

  • Maintaining, cataloguing and providing access to a wide collection of books, manuscripts and papers associated with the Bahá’í Faith.
  • Digitising selected materials to be made available online.
  • Providing an extensive and accessible repository for personal collections and materials, documents, and memorabilia—including digitised versions—to be preserved for posterity, that would include:
    • Books, booklets, pamphlets, diaries, address and autograph books, calendars
    • Bahá’í news journals, periodicals, newsletters, youth and child bulletins
    • Poems, essays, published and unpublished manuscripts, academic theses, transcripts
    • Programmes/materials of conferences, conventions, summer/winter/weekend schools
    • Digital and non-digital photographs, negatives, films, slides, plates
    • Audio and musical recordings (tapes, records, audio cassettes, CDs and other formats)
    • Published/unpublished films, video cassettes, CDs, digital and any other recorded formats
    • Artistic works, calligraphic scripts, musical compositions, posters, postcards
    • Historical records, reference/biographical books, family trees, biographies, obituaries, maps
    • Newspapers, periodicals, magazines and journalistic reports, news-cuttings.
  • Acquiring and maintaining:
    • Books and materials in English, Gaelic, Persian, Arabic, and other languages
    • Papers, correspondence, photographs, recordings, etc. relating to the late Mr Townshend and Mr Taherzadeh.
  • Providing a public platform for the promotion of discourses that contribute towards the advancement of society and the well-being of humanity.
